Second in the Eredivisie with one day to go, PSV Eindhoven announced the surprise departure of their coach Ruud van Nistelrooy with immediate effect.

For his first season on the PSV bench, former Manchester United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy has done some interesting things. His team is in second place in the Eredivisie with one game to go, wedged between Feyenoord Rotterdam, already champions, and Ajax Amsterdam, three points behind.

His team also won the Dutch Supercup and the Dutch Cup and several of his players have exploded this season, including former Parisian Xavi Simons.

Van Nistelrooy did not feel supported enough

But in a statement, PSV announced on Wednesday that Van Nistelrooy had decided to leave the team effective immediately, the day after a meeting with the club's board of directors that clearly did not go well.

"Van Nistelrooy made it known this morning that there was not enough support within the club to continue any longer. He immediately explained this to the players and staff. This Sunday, at the request of the management, Fred Rutten will temporarily resume his role as head coach," explained PSV, which "regrets" the decision of its coach but thanks him for his season.
