On Tuesday, Liverpool announced the appointment of their new sporting director, German Jörg Schmadtke, who has been with Wolfsburg for the last four years.

Disappointingly 5th in the Premier League at the end of the 2022-2023 season, Liverpool announced on Tuesday the appointment of Jörg Schmadtke as sporting director. The 59-year-old former German goalkeeper had been available since January, when he left Wolfsburg, where he had been sporting director for over four years.

Jürgen Klopp's compatriot will take up the post on June 1, subject to his work permit, and will succeed Julian Ward, who will bid farewell to the Reds this summer after more than a decade at the club.

Ward had joined the Reds' recruitment and scouting team in October 2012 before being promoted three years later to the newly created position of head of loans and soccer partnerships. He then became assistant sporting director, before being promoted to sporting director at the end of the 2021-22 season.
