Ninth in the Premier League at the end of the 2022-2023 season, Brentford made the recruitment of Dutch goalkeeper Mark Flekken (Freiburg) official on Wednesday.

Having enjoyed a fine season in the Premier League, the Bees are kicking off their summer mercato early with the signing this Wednesday of Freiburg's experienced Dutch goalkeeper Mark Flekken (29, 1m95). The English club has paid his release clause set at 13 million euros.

A four-time Dutch international, Mark Flekken kept goal 13 times this season in the Bundesliga with Freiburg, who finished a creditable 5th, and has signed a four-year contract with Brentford, running until June 2027.

Flekken to replace Raya

Flekken's recruitment is intended to anticipate the departure of Spanish goalkeeper David Raya, who has just one year left on his contract at Brentford and is much courted at the start of the summer mercato.

Raya's agent has complained, via Fabrizio Romano, that Brentford's asking price for his colt is too high (around €46m): "If Brentford don't lower the price for David Raya this summer, we'll be ready to leave as a free agent in a year's time, " threatened Jaume Munell.
