Di Maria to return to Benfica Lisbon
Thirteen years after leaving Real Madrid, Angel Di Maria is set to make his return to Benfica Lisbon.
The Portuguese press had been buzzing with rumours for several days. On Wednesday, the sports daily A Bola announced on its front page that Angel Di Maria was one step away from Benfica Lisbon, the club he left thirteen years ago to join Real Madrid.
Only a year after leaving PSG for Juventus, the Argentine world champion was not retained by the Italian club and had the choice between MLS, Saudi Arabia and Benfica Lisbon. His priority? Staying in Europe.
According to Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, Di Maria's return to Benfica is almost complete, and the Argentine is set to sign a one-year contract with the Lisbon club in the next few days, running until June 2024. A fine move on the part of the reigning Portuguese champions.
